A Tale of Two Births

On Monday, May 26th, PPF Director, Matt Chancey and his wife, Jennie, had the privilege of welcoming a new baby girl to their family. Jennie delivered the baby at home, surrounded by loved ones and competent medical personnel. It was an occasion for joy and grateful hearts. meriam up close

A few hours later, another baby girl was born, but under completely different circumstances. This baby was born in Sudan in a prison hospital. Her mother is Meriam Ibrahim, and she's in prison under sentence of death. Her crime? Marrying a Christian and converting from Islam.

Meriam's husband is an American citizen. At the time of her delivery, Meriam already had a 20-month-old son living with her in prison. Her sentence is that following the birth of her daughter, she receive 100 lashes in punishment for marrying a Christian. Then, after nursing the child for two years, she will be hung by the neck until dead.

What a contrast between the birth of the Chancey's daughter and Meriam's!

Meriam Ibrahim's plight has captured the world's attention. But her story is just one of countless others being played out all over the globe, from Nigeria to Sudan to Syria. A ruthless order persecuting people for no other reason than their beliefs.

Since 1989, Sudan's current regime has killed more than 2.5 million of its own people-- mostly "apostates" like Meriam. Whether they keep on killing is largely dependent on the world's response to the current situation. Meriam Ibrahim has helped put a human face on a hugely complex and widespread humanitarian crisis that is Sudan.

It is a privilege to be a part of an organization that seeks to inform and also mobilize the church in the West to intercede on behalf of their persecuted brethren in Sudan-- people like Meriam.

Please take a minute today to register your opinion with the White House (http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/submit-questions-and-comments). Meriam's two children are American citizens by right. Many Congressmen are calling for the Obama Administration to provide immediate asylum for Meriam and her children.
